Wilcox Radiation Doors
Wilcox Door distributes a large range of shielding doors for installations such as research & test laboratories, hot cells, medical facilities, & communications centers.
Depending upon the hazard, doors may be constructed of solid steel plate or supplied with cores of lead, concrete, or borated polyethylene. Additionally, power operation & special hardware, including electrical interlocks for controlled areas, are available.
This barytes concrete-filled radiation shielding door was designed for an accelerator-based epithermal neutron irradiation facility. The massive door opens and closes with a push of a button by an "wheel-driven" electro-mechanical operator. The door controls include varied sensor technologies and programmable logic to assure compliance with site safety and security missions. Active and passive infra-red sensors, as well as microwave sensors, are employed to detect both personnel and inanimate objects which might interfere with, or be impacted by, door motion. The system shown employs four infrared sensors, and one microwave sensor.

Electro-Mechanical Wheel Operator
For opening requests, this suite of sensors and programmable logic inhibit opening motion if people or objects lie, or move into, the door sweep area. For closing requests, the motor drive will stop and/or auto-reverse upon detection of interference. In security-conscious venues, similar doors have been designed with robust interlock logic tied to single-point control centers, external sensors, and to other doors. For example, controls may include airlock logic which ensures "Door A" is shut and locked prior to permitting "Door B" to open, and vice versa. Wilcox Door Company specializes in providing custom-designed programmable controls which address site-specific needs, typically beyond the scope of generic control offerings.
